Corruption in NAYA PAKISTAN ? DID i voted you for this ??

PESHAWAR: Maintaining transparency in the purchase of MRI and CT-Scan machines costing Rs280 million for the Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) has become a challenge for the government of Chief Minister Pervez Khattak as reports have surfaced that a senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been forcing the hospital administration to buy the machines from a company known for producing low quality equipment.

Sources in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and Health Department said that after a brainstorming session a committee of technical experts and senior doctors had shortlisted two of the three reputable companies for providing the machines to the hospital.

After all legal and technical procedures were fulfilled, it was decided that bidding for selection of one company offering the lowest rates would be opened on Saturday.According to sources, an influential figure at the Chief Minister’s Complaint Cell was favouring one of the companies and used all tactics to enable it get the contract worth Rs280 million for supplying the machines.

When members of the committee reached the HMC for opening the bids, Chief Executive Mumtaz Ali Marwat had already received a letter from the Health Department that an official of the CM Complaint Cell had sent to secretary health for suspension of the bidding.

“After realising that he would not be able to influence the committee members to favour the company he had chosen, he sent a letter to the secretary health arguing that the process was not transparent and should be stopped,” a senior government official pleading anonymity told The News.

The bids could not be opened even though some of the committee members got frustrated and advised the chief executive to continue the process. “We would not have objected had it happened during the ANP-PPP government. But it happened in the PTI government that had raised the slogan of eliminating corruption,” he complained.

A Health Department official said the MRI machine in HMC had been out of order since May 2012 and the patients were being referred to the Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) or private hospitals and laboratories, where they had to pay more compared to the public sector hospitals.

The machine was 20 years old and the hospital administration used to spend Rs8 million on its maintenance every year. The CT-Scan machine was installed in 1997. In modern machines, the CT-Scans are conducted in seconds while the machine at the HMC takes at least 15-20 minutes per patient.

During the caretaker government last year, the then secretary finance Sahibzada Mohammad Saeed took note of sufferings of the patients and allocated Rs280 millions for the purchase of new machines at the HMC. Rs180 million was earmarked for the purchase of MRI and Rs10 million for CT-Scan machine in the budget. He also gave Rs150 million for immediate purchase of necessary items for the Radiology Department of the hospital.

The HMC administration in July 2013 advertised the purchase of two machines and repeated it three times as only one company gave entered its bid. The matter was referred to the hospital’s management council, which recommended that it should be re-advertised on the pattern of Punjab and Balochistan governments.

“After holding meetings with experts from Punjab and Balochistan, the HMC administration opted to purchase the machine of 32 channels with better specifications keeping in view the growing number of patients,” he recalled.

Two companies were shortlisted while the third one was knocked out due to its failure to produce standard machines. “It was a surprise to members of the purchase committee that one person in the CM Complaint Cell took keen interest in supporting the case of the company that had been knocked out from the competition. Also, he used to come and sit in all the meetings without having any legal justification to do so,” the official said.

A committee member said they tried to make him understand that they would be blamed for causing losses to the exchequer in case they bought the machine from the said company. “The committee had approved two companies 10 days ago. The company favoured by him produces machines that have limited lifetime due to the use of lithium and malfunction frequently.

The company bribes officials by offering low prices, but later the government spends millions of rupees on maintenance. The machines manufactured by the two shortlisted companies are durable and up to the modern standards,” said the committee member wishing not to be named.

According to him, this company usually bought used machines in the United Arab Emirates and after repairs supplied those to the public sector hospitals in Pakistan. When contacted, provincial Health Secretary Ghulam Qadir Khan said he had forwarded the letter received from the CM Complaint Cell, but didn’t ask the HMC administration to cancel the purchase process. “I forwarded the said letter to the hospital administration, but asked it to go ahead with the purchase process.

The hospital had luckily the best IMC members and experts in the committee. I believe they would give their input in the process,” he said. He added that he also directed the hospital administration and purchase committee to fulfill all legal requirements for buying the best available machines.

Swat PTI general secy joins PML-N

MINGORA: General secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Swat, Mohmmad Zeb Khan on Tuesday quit his party and joined PML-N along with other disgruntled workers. The move follows nomination of Dr Haider Ali Khan, said to be a newcomer in PTI, as a party candidate for by-election for PK-86, Swat-VII.
Mr Zeb announced joining of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz at a press conference held at the residence of party’s central senior vice-president Amir Muqam at Sangota, Swat.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Zeb said that they worked for the PTI for 17 long years and that he was PTI candidate for PK-86 during May general elections.
He said that he had serious objection over the process adopted for joining of the party by Dr Haider, as he and other elected party office-bearers were not taken into confidence on that.
Mr Zeb said that if ignoring loyal party workers meant ‘a change’ for PTI then such a change was not acceptable to him. He alleged that there was no justice in PTI, which was claiming to provide justice to people.
Addressing the press conference, Mr Muqam said that PTI had not only disappointed the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but its performance also upset the party workers. He said that PTI had claimed to bring change in 90 days, but it could not take any step according to its manifesto even after one year of its rule.
Criticising the provincial government, he said that last year people of Swat had suffered because of dengue due failure of the government to take timely steps for its prevention.
SPEEDY JUSTICE: Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Mian Fasihul Mulk said on Tuesday that they were trying to ensure speedy justice to people and steps were being taken to dispose of pending cases in the high court and all lower courts of the province.
Addressing lawyers at PHC Mingora bench (Darul Qaza), he said that peace could not be established without rule of law.
He said that during unrest in Swat district and other parts of Malakand division the local lawyers and people had rendered a lot of sacrifices for restoration of peace.
Judges of the bench, Justice Abdul Latif and Justice Lal Jan Khattak, were also present on the occasion.
Abdul Haleem advocate said that the strength of judges needed to be increased as there were over 4,000 pending cases in courts in Swat district.
The chief justice later inaugurated general information disk and bar room for female lawyers.

QWP leader accuses PTI govt of indifference

PESHAWAR: Qaumi Watan Party parliamentary leader in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Sikandar Sherpao on Monday criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led provincial government for not maintaining law and order.

He was speaking at a meeting of party’s district organisers at QWP’s secretariat in Hayatabad to review arrangements for the upcoming intra-party elections. Sikandar Sherpao said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sensitive and Vulnerable Establishments and Places (Security) Ordinance, 2014 was against the spirit of the Constitution, which guaranteed protection to the citizens. “The government must not shirk responsibility and take steps to provide protection to the people,” he stressed.

He said the provincial government had failed to give any relief to the people in the face of rising inflation. “The PTI rulers have been unable to honour the pledges they made before the general election,” he added.

Sikandar Sherpao believed the provincial government was following flawed policies that had compounded the woes of the people. He said there was a sense of deprivation among the people as they were facing a host of problems.

Female Polio Worker Brutally Killed in NAYA KPK !!

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – The bullet-riddled body of a female polio worker was recovered Monday in Peshawar, northwest Pakistan, with her lips cut and hands broken.
The woman, identified as Salma Farooq, 35, was asleep Sunday night when eight armed men allegedly entered her home and tied-up her husband and tortured her five children.
A senior polio official in Peshawar, Mohamamd Faheem, said the armed men kidnapped Farooq and shifted her to an unknown location.
“The armed men cut her lips and broke her hands and dumped the body in the fields outside Peshawar,” the police official said.
The gruesome murder of a female polio worker enraged local villagers.
“She selflessly served the community and used to go door to door to vaccinate children. Anyone who killed her is the enemy of the poor villagers and deprived them of a medic,” said Niaz Mohamamd.
Government officials in Peshawar said the incident was the “worst” so far to happen to polio workers in the country, but were reluctant to say she killed because of her work.

Pakistani policemen stand guard as a health worker gives a child a polio vaccine in Karachi, Pakistan, March 9, 2014.

“At the moment we don’t have any proof that the female worker was killed due to her profession, but we condemn it in the strongest possible words,” said Dr. Jan Baz Afridi, the provincial head of the immunization program.
“We are investigating the brutal murder of the lay worker, but there could some other motives behind her killing,” a police official said.
Over 60 people, including polio workers and security personnel deployed to protect them, have been killed in Pakistan since 2012, according to the World Health Organization.
Militant groups such as the Pakistani Taliban oppose immunization and say it is a cover for U.S. spying.
The violent attacks on health workers have hampered the global campaign to eradicate the debilitating disease. Only Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria remain polio-endemic, down from more than 125 countries in 1988, according to WHO.

KP govt accused of framing laws in haste

KP govt accused of framing laws in haste

PESHAWAR - Opposition parties in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Tuesday accused the provincial government of passing three very important bills in haste and did not follow the set rules and traditions of the House.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly met with Speaker Asad Qaiser in the chair.
KP Minister for Agriculture Shahram Khan moved The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Farm Services Centers Bill, 2014, Minister for Health Shaukat Yousafzai presented The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Authority Bill, 2014 and Revenue Minister Ali Amin Gandapur tabled The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tenancy (Amendment) Bill, 2014.
Though opposition did not protest against the first bill moved by Shahram Khan but recorded strong protest against the government for passing other bills as what they termed in 'hast'.
"Bulldozing legislation on the basis of majority is neither a good practice nor a tradition of the KP Assembly," ANP Parliamentary Leader Sardar Hussain Babak said. He urged the chair to take all stakeholders into confidence before making legislation.
Speaker Asad Qaisar, however, was quick enough to clarify that all opposition's amendments had been accommodated and he was treating every member equally. QWP Parliamentary Leader Sikandar Sherpao said that making legislation in haste would affect the people and their economy, suggesting the government to refer these bills to select committees for further deliberations.
On this occasion, KPK Information Minister Shah Farman replied that opposition earlier participated in discussion on important bills, including the Local Government and Right to Information Bills but it did not make any valuable addition to these bills. He said the government could not delay legislation, asking the opposition to present amendment if they had any.
KP Health Minister Shaukat Yousafzai said that the bill has been tabled in the assembly after thorough consideration. "If opposition sees any weakness, it must pinpoint to amend it," he added. Sardar Idrees of PTI said the bills had been tabled in January but none of the opposition member presented any amendment. The session was adjourned till today (Wednesday).
KP GOVT TAKES REVOLUTIONARY STEPS FOR MINORITIES' WELFARE:Advisor to Chief Minister for Minorities Affairs Sardar Suran Singh has said that the PTI government has taken revolutionary steps for the welfare of minorities in the province.
He expressed these views while hearing public complaints at the Chief Minister Complaints Cell. Chairman Complaints Cell Haji Dilroz Khan, Vice Chairman Mukarram Khan Afridi and Chief Security Officer to CM Zaibullah Khan also assisted him in the redressal of public complaints. Sardar Soran Singh till night besides receiving complaints on telephone, fax, post and email also collected direct complaints from the people and disposed of them under his own supervision.
The advisor said that Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has recently increased employment quota of minorities from 0.5 per cent to 3 per cent and had also approved the recruitment of one minority officer in every district of the province. Similarly, a minority committee had also been constituted in each district under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner concerned to resolve the problems of minorities' representatives and employees through coordination.
He said for first time after passage of 25 years the portfolio of minorities was given to a minority legislator, which is the ample acknowledgment of the love, services and capabilities of minorities. Furthermore, he said that a separate working group had also been established for the development of minorities, whose comprehensive recommendations will be ensured.
He said that the establishment of a separate Directorate for Minorities Affairs and budget is also under consideration. On complaints received from Sheikhabad and other parts of the city relating to cleanliness, he directed the Municipal Corporation Peshawar for taking action with immediate effect. Similarly, on a complaint regarding non- operationalisation of a tube-well despite completion from Totalai, Buner, he contacted the Executive Engineer (XEN) concerned and asked explanation from him.
The XEN assured that the provision of water from the tube-well would start from next week. Taking notice of the complaints of cheatings in some examination halls, he directed the boards concerned for initiating immediate action and conduct of raids. On complaints relating to gas, power connections and National Identity Cards (NICs), he said though these complaints are regarding federal departments, but he will contact the authorities concerned and will make request for their redressal.

PTI just keeps disappointing: Mr CM, that wasn’t insulting enough

PTI just keeps disappointing: Mr CM, that wasn’t insulting enough

If one more person tells me that Pakistan has a better record on women’s political representation than the ‘developed nations’ (meaning the US) because we have twice had a female head of state, I will use my very female and very strong hand to slap them across the face.
The Women in Politics Maps 2014 released by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women recently ranked Pakistan 72nd among 189 countries in terms of female representation in the parliament. We could have been ranked even lower – there is no woman on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s handpicked cabinet, for instance.
But one does not even need the IPU and UN Women to corroborate the claim of women’s pathetic representation in Pakistani politics. All we need to do is look north to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) where Chief Minister Pervez Khattak just today told women lawmakers to refrain from suggesting development schemes and avoid tasks that fall under the duties of male members of parliament.
Since when has development been gender-specific, Mr CM?
Furthermore, in case his statement wasn’t patronising and misogynistic enough, he also asked women legislators to concentrate on policies regarding women’s welfare. I mean, seriously, if women have such an itch to do something with the opportunity that’s been handed to them by their benevolent male counterparts in parliament, they can stay in their ‘zenankhana’ and discuss their women problems. Why do they have to distract the ‘alpha men’ from their noble jobs as saviours of the nation, including women?
So yes, what was it that you were saying about women’s representation in Pakistani politics?
The truth is that Pakistani women parliamentarians have almost always run second-fiddle to men, which is why the findings of the Women in Politics report and KPK CM’s comments shouldn’t come as a surprise at all. In the May 2013 election, for example, an overwhelming majority of election rallies were addressed strictly by men. In none of the mainstream political parties is a woman in charge of anything remotely important, and a large majority of the women who are now members of Pakistan’s National Assembly have made it there on the reserved seats for women, not the competitive ones that are open for contest among genders.
The female head of state we talk of, Benazir Bhutto, was only able to become the prime minister because she was her father’s daughter. The reason she was nominated for prime minister was because she was the chairperson of a national party that swept the elections, a party also inherited from her father.
Perhaps it is because of this perceived ‘privilege’ that women parliamentarians are barely ever taken seriously, a rather laughable assumption to make if one were to spend a few minutes looking at how much Pakistani legislators have contributed.
I would like to draw Mr Khattak’s attention, and that of every man who holds the same view as him, to a report by non-profit legislative watchdog, The Free and Fair Election Network, which showed that women parliamentarians in the outgoing National Assembly were to be a lot more attentive than their male counterparts. Despite being only 76 out of 350, women members asked 1,826 questions out of a total of 3,314 questions that were posed. For some clear perspective, read it like this: while women made up only 22% of the Lower House membership, they asked 55% of the total questions asked while the assembly was in session.
As the CM of the province, it is indeed Mr Khattak’s prerogative to delegate legislative topics to his subordinates. However, I wonder if he was just as concerned about the overstepping of gender boundaries when a bunch of men decided to usurp a woman’s right to decide who represents her in the Provincial Assembly that he was himself the head of?
On May 13, 2013, I had travelled to Lahore just to be able to vote – and vote for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). I was then out in the street in Karachi, demanding re-election in NA-250. But the party just keeps disappointing me again and again.
I know that many PTI supporters, some genuinely well-meaning and respectful men, will respond to my tweets about this statement and this blog with some sort of opaque explanations, but the message is clear; the one certain change that is coming is that women can talk, until they decide to challenge men on topics of consequence.
Thank you PTI for that reminder.

Peshawar, Quetta bomb attacks kill 21

Peshawar, Quetta bomb attacks kill 21

PESHAWAR/QUETTA: Twenty-one people were killed and 90 others, including women and children, sustained injuries in bomb attacks in Peshawar and Quetta on Friday.
Eleven persons were killed and around 50 others injured when a suicide bomber targeted an armoured personnel carrier (APC) of the police in the Batathal Bazaar near the boundary with Bara subdivision of Khyber Agency on Friday.

“A suicide bomber attacked a police APC when it was patrolling the area,” Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Najibur Rahman told The News. The APC of the Sarband Police Station was damaged in the attack and the cops inside the vehicle sustained only slight injuries. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

Najibur Rahman said the cops were the target of the bomber as the militants wanted to weaken the police force in the area.“The force has a huge presence in the area to stop the attacks on the city from the tribal areas,” he said, adding that a few policemen were wounded in the blast.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, 11 persons were killed in the attack and 50 sustained injuries. “Eight bodies and 24 wounded persons were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. Three bodies and 27 injured people were taken to the Hayatabad Medical Complex,” Bilal Ahmad Faizi, the spokesman for the Rescue 1122, told The News.

Some of the dead were identified as Farman, Jamil, Naseem, Abdur Raheem, Habibullah, Mehnat Bibi, Asad, Gulnara, Waheedullah and an unidentified person.Officials said Sub-Inspector Bukhari Shah, who has been leading the operations against the militants in the area for the last several years, was the target of the bomber. He had sustained injuries in a previous attack on him. At least two attempts on his life were made in the past. He remained unharmed in the Friday’s attack.

Emergency was declared at the city hospitals after the explosion. Many women and children were among those injured in the explosion that ripped through the crowded bazaar. More than 10 vehicles and almost a dozen shops and cabins, a nearby gas station and several pushcarts were also damaged in the explosion.

The injured included Kamran, Fazal Rehman, Haji Muhammad Ashraf, Shafiullah, Naseeb Gul, Habibur Rehman, Shafiq, Rizwan, Muzammil, Hazrat Ali, Mehrunnisa, Darwaish, Sadiqullah, Momin, Atif, Gulzar, Fatima, Mira Jana, Salman, Seema, Naseeb, Arshad, Shan Zeb, Asmatullah and Abdul Amin.

Police, along with the Frontier Constabulary, have established a number of checkposts on the boundary with the Khyber Agency to stop the militant attacks on the provincial capital. Most of the routes connecting the tribal area with Peshawar are properly patrolled.

However, attackers still manage to find their way to carry out attacks in the areas close to the boundary between the tribal and settled areas as well as other parts of the provincial metropolis. Thousands of people have already left the area following the frequent bombings and other attacks during the last many years.

Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak announced compensation for all the victims of the suicide explosion. Under the package, heirs of the dead will be paid Rs0.5 million each while the injured will be given Rs0.2 million. Similarly, the injured police Jawans will also be paid compensation under the police package.

The chief minister ordered immediate release of the compensation to all victims and also asked the district administration and police to conduct separate inquiries for bringing to justice the terrorists involved in the incident as soon as possible.

Condemning the incident, the chief minister said the purpose of this terrorist attack was to create a sense of insecurity among the citizens and demoralise the security forces. He said that after the beginning of peace negotiations and announcement of ceasefire by the Taliban, the real faces of anti-state elements was clearly revealed in such cruel acts of terrorism, which would be dealt with sternly.

In Quetta, a powerful bomb blast killed 10 people, including two children, and injured 40 others on the Jinnah Road. The bomb exploded near the Government Science College when people were busy in routine activities.

The bomb was fixed to a bicycle which had been parked on the main road. As soon as a patrolling team of the Frontier Corps (FC) crossed the site at around 3:00pm, the explosion took place. At that time a passenger bus was also passing through the area which came under attack. Over 40 people were travelling in the bus when the explosion took place, eyewitnesses said.

“It was a time device which was tied to a bicycle,” said officials of the bomb disposal squad. Human body parts were scattered all over the place while the injured were crying with pain.Official and Edhi Foundation’s ambulances rushed to the spot and started shifting the victims of the explosion to the Civil Hospital for treatment. Emergency was declared in all the hospitals of Quetta. The condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical.

Police and FC personnel reached the spot and cordoned off the area as officials of the bomb disposal squad (BDS) examined the type of explosive material used. The BDS officials said four to five kilogrammes of explosives were used in the blast.

One passenger bus, three auto rickshaws and one motorcycle were damaged badly in the explosion, while windowpanes of nearby buildings were also smashed.SSP Quetta Muhammad Jaffar said police and law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident.

“The attack was an attempt to target the FC patrolling team,” officials said. Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai and Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch expressed deep grief over the Jinnah Road blast. They strongly condemned the explosion and directed to apprehend those involved in the blast.

Our Kohat correspondent adds: A militant group Ahrarul Hind claimed responsibility for the blasts in Peshawar and Quetta.

Talking to The News from an undisclosed location by phone, Umar Qasim, declaring himself as the leader of Ahrarul Hind, said that they had carried out the attacks on the police in Peshawar and Quetta.

Agencies add: President Mamnoon Hussain condemned the terrorist attacks in Peshawar and Quetta which killed innocent people.

The president prayed early recovery of the injured. He also prayed for courage to the bereaved families to bear the loss with equanimity. The Quaid-e-Millat Jafariya, Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi, also condemned the attacks and demanded strict action against the terrorists.

KPK govt costs two more lives in Polio vaccine campaign

CM Khattak enjoys luxury life with three official residences for personal use

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Parvez Khattak has undermined all claims of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), about the simplicity and eliminating the VIP culture, by taking allotments of three official residents for personal use, a private news channel reported on Friday.
Parvez Khattak had announced, at time of taking over post of the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that he would quit luxury life style and not stay in the CM House.
Despite tall claims of the PTI and his own announcement of adopting simple life style, KP’s CM Khattak is enjoying occupation of three official residences, revealed the official record of KP Assembly.
CM Khattak is not only residing in the annexe of CM House, he has also taken allotment of two more official bungalows for personal use, revealed Nighat Orakzaiin KP Assembly.
Opposition’s female member Nighat Orakzai revealed during session of the KP Assembly that PTI’s simplicity claiming ministers are living in four, four Kanals’ official residences.
The opposition members started loud agitation, over Nighat Orakzai’s revelation about the official residences, and made it difficult for the Speaker to continue the session.
Information Minister Shah Farman tried to clear position of the CM Khattak before the house but the opposition members refused to hear any explanation.

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak flew in two helicopters to Havelian in Abbottabad district to plant a sapling and launch the plantation campaign, an opposition MPA said on Thursday.
“They spent a million rupees by flying in two choppers to Havelian and planted a sapling of just Rs200,” said Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotha, an MPA of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz from Abbottabad district.
Speaking on a point in the provincial assembly on Thursday, the opposition member said that the PTI-led coalition government on the one hand was making tall claims about austerity, on the other the party chairman and chief minister were spending money extravagantly.
“Chairman Imran Khan and Chief Minister Pervez Khattak came to Havelian in two separate helicopters where they spent just 10 minutes to plant a sapling. Is that austerity,” he asked the chair. The lawmaker claimed that Rs1 million were spent on the launching ceremony of the drive.
Parliamentary secretary for environment Fazal Elahi did not contradict the statement of the opposition member. He, however, said that thousands of saplings were planted in the area on that day. He warned that he would expose lavish lifestyle of the PML-N leaders if opposition benches did not stop propaganda against his party leaders.

Fake degree case: Arrest warrant issued for PTI MPA

Published: March 7, 2014

HARIPUR: The district and sessions court issued an arrest warrant for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA Faisal Zaman on Thursday for being absent from court proceedings. Zaman was facing charges of having a fake degree that the election commission had referred to the court for investigation.
Zaman was elected to the provincial assembly on PTI’s ticket from PK-52 Haripur IV in 2013 after defeating Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s provincial president and former chief minister Pir Sabir Shah. Shah, who lost to Zaman for the second time, had challenged the legitimacy of Zaman’s BA degree.
Zaman has claimed that he obtained his degree from the University of Nigeria, where his company has been doing business for decades. Shah alleged that Zaman’s degree is fake and, after the election tribunal termed it a suspicious case, the matter was referred to the district and sessions court in Haripur for further investigation.
The proceedings in the case started during November 2013 but, according to court sources, Zaman has yet to attend a single hearing. When he did not appear again on Thursday, District and Sessions Judge Azeem Afridi issued an arrest warrant in the name of the MPA, asking the police to ensure his appearance by March 12.
When approached for comments, ASP Headquarters Wahid Mehmood claimed he has not yet received clear court orders. “We are bound to obey the court’s directives,” said Mehmood, adding “I cannot act unless my office receives a written order.”
Meanwhile, Zaman, while talking to The Express Tribune, said “My lawyer appeared before the court today and appealed for an adjournment since I was in Karachi for a meeting.”
