KP hospitals short of treatment facilities

Updated Jan 17, 2015 09:02am

PESHAWAR: The shortage of beds, staff and equipment at the nursery wards is hampering proper treatment of neonates in public sector hospitals of the province, pediatricians say.
They say that the 1200-bed Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) has capacity for only 35 babies whereas bed occupancy rate is 150. The ward has eight incubators, which are not enough to cater to the needs of patients. At least six more incubators are required to treat the patients. Similarly, it also needs the services of more trained staff nurses.
Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), the province’s biggest health facility, has 30 cots capacity but the number of hospitalised babies remains more than 55. The 1700-bed hospital has only three incubators. Recently, the government established three children units in the hospital but no attention was paid to expansion of the nursery ward to facilitate the newborns.
Likewise, the 700-bed Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) has only 20 cots at its nursery unit where one of the three incubators is also out of order. The number of baby patients at the hospital remains more than 30.

54 of every 1,000 neonates die annually of acute infection, low birth weight, birth asphyxia and premature birth in the province

The pediatricians say that neonates are the most vulnerable to diseases as 54 of them die annually per 1,000 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is the highest mortality in Pakistan. The reasons are acute infections, low birth weight, birth asphyxia and premature birth, they add.
The experts say that most of these causes are preventable. According to them, one in three neonates dies of hypothermia and not due to lack of high technological equipment but they require availability of simple facilities at the right time. The lack of attention by the government is resulting in the deaths of neonates from preventable causes, they say.
In absence of the desired infrastructure at the government-run hospitals, the treatment given to neonates is not up to the mark, the pediatricians say.
There are only four neonatal units in the province that include three in Peshawar and one in Ayub Teaching Hospital with 20 cots which has six incubators. There is no proper unit for neonates at Saidu Group of Hospitals, Gomal Medical College Dera Ismail Khan, Kohat Institute of Medical Sciences and Bannu Medical College.
On contrary, there are more than 12,000 beds for adult patients in the hospitals of the province and more units to cater to the needs of adult patients are being built.
Not only extreme shortage of beds but the existing nursery units at the public sector hospitals are totally dependent on the children units from where health staff, including house officers, medical officers, trainee medical officer and consultant is assigned the task to cover patients there which adversely affects the patient care, the experts say.
There is only one sanctioned post of consultant at KTH while units in other hospitals don’t have permanent posts of consultants owing to which treatment of patients is affected. KTH has also a sanctioned post of registrar.
The existing nursery units don’t have ventilation facilities which force people to rush their ailing babies to Islamabad. The province has two nursery units but common people can’t afford their daily charges, which are about Rs5,000.
The current facilities receive more than triple number of patients of their capacity where they can’t get treatment according to the standard protocols, pediatricians lament.
They say that doctors have to accommodate two and three neonates on a single bed, which is medically harmful for their health. Several requests were made to the government to build nursery units at district headquarters hospitals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and agency headquarters hospitals in Federally Administered Tribal Areas to facilitate patients but all such requests hadn’t been heard, they say.
The pediatricians told Dawn that there was great need to establish one more nursery unit each at KTH, LRH and HMC in view of the workload to put brakes on avoidable deaths of newborns. To further ensure specialised treatment to the babies, the government should recruit consultants for those units, they said.
According to them, the government should appoint diploma-holders in child health by giving them special allowance. The staff working in those wards also needs to be given special allowances in view of the hard duty, they said.
The pediatricians say that UNICEF, Save the Children and other non-governmental organisations don’t provide funds for such interventions.

Imran last year announced 2 billion trees in KP in 5 years. How many did U plant in 1 year?

Imran formally inaugurates KP Green Growth Initiative project

PESHAWAR: Chairman Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan Sunday formally launched Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Green Growth Initiative (GGI) to bring maximum areas under plantation by planting two billion trees in the province in five years.
The Green Growth Initiative, a unique project of its kind in the history of the country, also include measures including setting up of national parks, vlauing KP forest resource aimed at offseting the challenges of galobal warming and climatic change, said Malik Amin Aslam, Coordinator Green KP Initiative in his presentation about the mega project.
The inauguration ceremony was held at Pakistan Forest Institute, University of Peshawar. Chief Minister, Pervez Khattak, provincial Ministers including Shah Farman, Shaukat Yousafzai, officials of Environment Department and members of PTI and members of Insaf Student Federation also attended the function in large number.
Speaking on the occasion, PTI Chairman said KP Green Growth Initiative is taken to address the enviornment problems being faced by our country in general and KP In particular.
Under this mega project, two billion saplings would be planted in the province over next five years with help of forest department, students, civil society organizations, educational institutes and other to make the province lush green, he added.
As per the plan, four important sectors, including increasing forest-covered area, protected green areas, parks, promotion of environmental tourism, increasing resources of energy and climatic changes and resilience would also be paid special attention.
Imran Khan also apprised the participants that Governor House of KP would be made as a special park for female. Similarly the existing parks in Peshawar would be cleared from land grabbers.
He said there would be complete ban on cutting of trees in national park and Safari parks would be set up in each district of the province to create awareness among masses about importance of wild species.
Imran Khan said his party wanted to transform Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from most vulnerable province to climatic change into a Most adoptive and for this purpose such measures would be adopted on warm footing.
He urged the members of ISF (Insaf Student Federation) to fully cooperate with the government in its efforts of improvining the enviornment of the province as without the help of youth no aim can be achieved.
He said its time to take environmental issue very seriously because around two hundred and fifty thousand children are dying annually in the country due to water borne diseases. Even in Pakistan, there is no proper sanitation system which is very deplorable.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak said his government is taking measures on war footing to improve the living standard of people. We are working hard to fulfill our promises which we made with people at time of elections, he added.
Coordinator Green Growth Initiative, Amin Aslam also apprised the participants that a number of measures would be taken under this project for meeting the enviornmental challenges.
The project also include measures for increaing forest area from existing 20 percent to 30 percent in five years. Similarly, protected areas will be increased from existing 11 percent to 15 percent.
People will witness a Tree Tusanmi as two billion trees will be planted in the province in five years, he added.

Imran Khan's bride must say sorry for abuse slur

Imran Khan's bride must say sorry for abuse slur, says angry ex following claims he was violent towards her during 10-year marriage

  • Dr Ijaz Rehman has given Reham Khan a week to withdraw allegations
  • Dr Rehman wants an apology for the slur to his 'good name and character'
  • Mrs Khan also claimed Dr Rehman left her penniless after their divorce
  • But Dr Rehman says the comments are attempts by Mrs Khan to win sympathy from a Pakistani public hostile towards her new marriage

The former husband of Imran Khan’s new wife is demanding a public apology after she claimed he was violent toward her during their ten-year marriage.
Dr Ijaz Rehman has given Reham Khan a week to withdraw allegations of abuse, which she made in an interview soon after marrying the Pakistani politician and cricketing icon.
‘I have asked Reham to apologise for the slur to my good name and character,’ said Dr Rehman, an NHS psychiatrist who lives in Lincolnshire.

‘She knows that what she said is not true and while I do not want to get involved in mudslinging, I will defend myself vigorously if she does not set the record straight.’
Mrs Khan, a former BBC presenter, also claimed Dr Rehman left her penniless after their divorce, leaving her to bring up their three children alone.
But Dr Rehman strenuously denied all the allegations, telling The Mail on Sunday that they were attempts by Mrs Khan to win sympathy from a Pakistani public hostile towards her new marriage.
As a divorcee, she is mistrusted by religious conservatives in Pakistan, and last week she was condemned over footage of her frying sausages. Muslims are forbidden from eating pork.

‘What Reham said about domestic violence was in order for her to be seen in good light and come out as an innocent victim to cover her deeds, at my expense,’ Dr Rehman said. ‘I ask her to act honourably and honestly and issue an apology and retract her statement within a week. I have never lifted my hands on anyone and I have never been involved in any kind of domestic violence in any shape or form.
‘As for her claim that I left her penniless, I have always looked after her and my children.’
The doctor met and married Reham in Pakistan, but they lived in Lincolnshire until they split in 2005. Reham eventually moved to East London and went on to work as a weather presenter for regional programme South Today.
She returned to her homeland in 2012 and began dating Mr Khan, 62, who was previously married to heiress Jemima Goldsmith. However, their marriage has been condemned by conservatives, who say she is an unsuitable partner for a Right-wing politician who makes much of his Islamic faith.
In an interview on Pakistani TV last week, 42-year-old Reham was asked about being a victim of domestic abuse. She said: ‘Domestic violence is a big issue and no attention is paid to it in Pakistan. [It] happens in many shapes and forms.
‘I have never spoken about my personal experience of domestic violence because I was in [the] media and I felt it would be unfair to expose the other party.’
She said she had been reluctant to tie the knot again because of her experiences in her former marriage.
Last week the Khans visited a school in Peshawar where 132 pupils were massacred by the Taliban – but they were met by crowds of grieving relatives chanting for them to leave.

Imran pays Bani Gala electricity bills | Thook kay chatna yeah htoa hay PTI waloo

Ending civil disobedience: Imran pays Bani Gala electricity bills

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Friday paid two pending electricity bills of his Bani Gala residence in Islamabad — a move which appears to signal the end of the civil disobedience movement he had launched against the federal government in August last year.
Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) authorities confirmed that the cricketer-turned-politician has paid two bills – a day into his marriage to DawnNews Anchor Reham Khan – which were pending since August 2014.
Khan has two power connections installed at his residence — the first one required him to pay Rs133,260 whereas the second amount stood at Rs15,310.
In October 2014, Iesco had cut off power supply to Khan's Bani Gala residence, citing non-payment of electricity dues as the reason for disconnecting electricity despite Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif's earlier claims that Imran had been paying his electricity bills.
Last year in August, Khan had given a call for civil disobedience as part of the PTI's then-protests against the federal government and had urged people not to pay taxes and utility bills to force the government to accept the party's demands, which included the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif whose government they called the outcome of a rigged election.
However, in the wake of the deadly assault on the Army Public School in Peshawar on Dec 16, Khan called off his four-month long protests, saying that the country needed national unity.

Meet the new Mrs. Imran Khan

Shadi ker hi li hay tu darta kion hay salay !!

Imran Khan confirmed last night that he has secretly married a former BBC weather girl days after his family said he had denied it - provoking a furious reaction from his sister.
The 62-year-old Pakistan cricketer-turned-politician, who divorced heiress Jemima Goldsmith in 2004, has wed 41-year-old divorced mother-of-three Reham Khan.
On New Year's Eve, Mr Khan said rumours of marriage were 'greatly exaggerated' and his sister Aleema said the family challenged him 'a few days ago' over the news and he denied it.
Speaking to reporters at Heathrow airport last night before boarding a flight, Khan is reported to have said: ‘I am going to Pakistan to share good news about my marriage with the nation. I have nothing to hide.’
Told by MailOnline that her brother had revealed he was actually married, Aleema Khan said: ‘Really? Really? Let’s see if he announces it officially. I am taken aback.
'This is a real challenge for him. We haven’t met her and I don’t know that we want to meet her.

Ms Khan, a divorced mother-of-three, was a BBC weather girl but is now a news anchor of AAJ TV
‘It is his decision, he is a grown up. It is more important how the children feel. I suppose in any situation like this the children will not feel good about it. They do look up to their father.'
Speaking amid a political storm surrounding rumours of the marriage, she said she hoped Reham Khan 'will be good for Pakistan and our brother'.
She added: 'It all depends on how the public respond to it. The biggest surprise is how everybody in Pakistan feels they have a right to participate in the decision.

'He is a grown man, we are watching the situation unfold.’
The Daily Mail’s diarist Sebastian Shakespeare broke the news of Khan’s marriage to the broadcaster last week.
Denial: Imran Khan's sister Aleema said the family had a showdown with the politician and he denied the secret marriage

Khan’s new wife lived in Britain for part of her previous marriage, when she was a weather girl and presenter on the BBC regional news programme South Today.
Reham, who was born in Libya to Pakistani parents, has three children from her previous marriage to a doctor.
It is believed family members and those in his political party tried talking him out of the marriage.
Online abusers also set up Facebook hate pages attacking the TV news anchor.
News of the union sparked outrage in Pakistan and trolls have now accused Ms Khan of being a lesbian for stroking a woman's back, and attempted to shame her for going to parties.
Users have criticised her for wearing short skirts, lambasted her for dancing with unknown men in public, and branded her daughter a 'pornstar' while claiming to be in possession of topless pictures.
One image even claims to show Ms Khan in a sex shop in the UK wearing a pink nightdress, with a collar around her neck and a whip slung over her shoulder.

Among the images posted by online abusers was this photograph, which they claim shows Ms Khan in a sex shop, wearing a night dress, suspenders, a collar and with a whip over her shoulder

Backlash: Hate groups have already sprung up on Facebook where users have been sharing photos of her dancing and going out with friends while making abusive comments
Mr Khan's sister Aleema earlier branded the reports of marriage lies, saying they had been concocted by Mr Khan's political enemies to damage his reputation.
Online trolls have attacked Ms Khan for her appearance, dancing with unknown men, and attending parties

She told MailOnline: ‘This is the only way the opposition know how to attack him. These are the tactics they would stoop to. It’s out of control. I guess that is politics.
‘I spoke to my brother a few days ago and he said it isn’t true.
'We, the family, just asked him outright, have you married her? And he said no. I don’t know if they are in a relationship, here [in Pakistan] you are either getting married or you are not.
‘We’d be extremely happy if he marries a good person and settles down, of course we would. But it is not just his consideration, it’s a consideration for the country, it’s like a national-level decision.
'There are people in Pakistan who love him so much that everyone wants to participate in his private life, they feel he is their leader and should be part of his decision.
‘Everybody [we, the family] are taken aback at how much other people want to participate in this decision.’
Asked if her brother is in a secret relationship with the TV broadcaster, she said: ‘It’s a confusing signal to everyone who follows him [but] we asked him if he was married and he said no. I don’t know if he is in a relationship. We just asked him if he was married.’
Reaction to the rumoured marriage had been very negative in Pakistan and there has been a backlash on social media.
Photos of Reham in revealing clothes and a video of her doing a tango while working for the BBC are prompting insulting comments in the conservative Islamic country.
